    What is CBRS?

    CBRS stands for Citizens Broadband Radio Service (Not to be confused with the Citizens Band Radio Service or CB Radio). The FCC established this band in 2015 and created a three-tiered approach to sharing the spectrum among federal and non-federal users of the band. CBRS is the 3.5 GHz band, more specifically 3550 to 3700 MHz. Great information on the band can be found directly at the FCC website.

    Why should anyone care about CBRS?

    This is a first-of-its-kind dynamic spectrum sharing model that is widely viewed as an “experiment” of sorts to see whether this method of access to spectrum will allow fair sharing among all potential users of this radio spectrum. The FCC in the United States is at the forefront of using this dynamic sharing method, and many countries around the world are watching closely. If successful, it’s believed that other countries and other spectrum bands will follow a similar model in the future.

    What was in this frequency band in the past?

    The FCC released the 3.65 GHz spectrum in 2005, making 50 MHz available for terrestrial wireless broadband operations The FCC allowed this operation by issuing an unlimited number of Non-exclusive Nationwide (NN) licenses. The operator then simply registers any devices they deploy with the FCC ULS database. This helped to ensure that only equipment certified for use in this band was being deployed.

    What’s happening now?

    CBRS is expanding the available spectrum by 100 MHz to a total of 150 MHz (3550 to 3700 MHz). This comes with rules around how the spectrum is used. Rules in this band are found in Part 96. Using this band requires the equipment to communicate with an automated frequency coordination system, also called a Spectrum Access System (SAS).

    The Baicells Nova-436Q is a two-carrier outdoor eNodeB (eNB) that operates using standardized Long-Term Evolution (LTE) Time Division Duplexing (TDD) technology. This advanced 4x1W eNB delivers carrier aggregation (CA) across contiguous and non-contiguous channels, as defined by 3GPP.

    There are two types of CBRS devices (CBSDs): Category A and Category B. Category A devices are small, indoor, low power (1 watt) small cells with radios that operate in the 3.5 GHz radio band. Category B devices are designed to be used outdoors, operating at a higher power (50 watts) and often hung from street furniture such as light poles. The FCC has mandated that all Category B CBSDs must be installed by a certified professional to ensure that their location is properly registered with the SAS.

    KP Performance Antennas Launches New Line of Rugged, Affordable CBRS Antennas

    Ericsson’s Small Cells product portfolio delivers the most flexible and high-powered solutions in the industry.

    KP Performance Antennas, an Infinite Electronics brand and a manufacturer of wireless network antennas, has just released a new CBRS antenna line ideal for WISP and enterprise applications and including four models: a 4-port Omni, a 4-port 90-degree sector antenna, a 2-port 15-degree flat panel, and a 2-port 60-degree flat panel.

    KP's new Omni CBRS antenna features 4 ports, +/- 45 slant polarization and covers the 3500-3800 MHz frequency bands. It is comprised of two dual-polarized Omni arrays in a single radome enclosure with one mounting point. The small, 27-inch Omni limits the tower footprint and provides 360-degree coverage with 8.5 dBi of gain. This CBRS Omni antenna supports one 4x4 MIMO or two 2x2 MIMO radios in CBRS band 3.5-3.8 GHz.

    The CBRS sector antenna in this line boasts 4-ports, 17.7 dBi of gain and slant, dual-polarization. It covers the 3300-3800 MHz bands with 90-degree HPBW and zero-degree fixed electrical downtilt. This antenna is ideal for 4-sector frequency reuse with 4x4 MIMO LTE equipment and CBRS deployments. It also features low-PIM, N-type female connectors.

    This new product line also includes a 15-degree flat panel CBRS antenna that covers the 3500-3800 MHz frequency band. This antenna boasts stable 20 dBi gain in a small, 12x12x1-inch factor for CBRS band. This industrial design includes a UV-resistant radome and powder-coated mounting hardware. It also features 2 ports and +/-45 slant polarization. The 60-degree flat panel in this line includes all of these same features, except 10 dBi of gain instead of 20 dBi.

    Increased deIncreased demand for wireless connectivity is driving capacity requirements and spectrum availability for network deployment. Supporting the need for available spectrum has become difficult, driving the industry to take action to address the issue.

    The Citizens Broadband Radio Services (CBRS) spectrum band opened up 150 MHz of spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band for commercial use to a larger segment of the market, resulting in a shared access service. The FCC has finalized the three-tiered access of incumbent users, priority access licensees (PAL) and generally authorized in which the auctioning of PALs will begin in July. Despite these clearly defined user access rules, the surge of CBRS users will necessitate careful frequency planning and interference mitigation techniques. In point to point link, whether for client premise or backhaul, the antenna will be the first line of defense in mitigating interference.
