Colubris InMotion MSC-5000 Series are 1U rack-mount systems designed to integrate into an existing Ethernet backbone infrastructure. Two platforms provide solutions for a remote office, or large campus network.

InMotion MultiService Controllers (MSC) are the central nervous system in the Colubris Intelligent MultiService System, controlling the operation of intelligent access points distributed throughout a wireless zone, building or campus. InMotion MSCs deliver a range of Colubris Value Services to wireless client devices, ensuring consistent quality and security as clients roam throughout the network.

The first family of multiservice controllers in the industry, InMotion MSCs create a distributed WLAN/LAN switching infrastructure that leverages LAN switching capacity to deliver unprecedented WLAN scalability and efficiency. InMotion MSCs compose the control plane in a Colubris TriPlane™ Architecture, centrally controlling a network of hundreds of multiservice access points per MSC. They also protect customer investments by providing a smooth migration path to next generation Unified Services Networks.

The Colubris Operating System embedded in all InMotion MSCs works with other CIMS components to create Virtual Service Communities - discrete groups of network users with assigned service policies. The Colubris Operating System virtualizes the CIMS infrastructure, providing VSC users or devices with access to one or more applications that share a common set of QoS and security policies. Once installed, InMotion MSCs can be easily upgraded via software to take advantage of new Colubris Operating System features that enhance mobility and create new services.

A Fast Roaming Service enables portable networking devices, such as WLAN phones and PDAs to maintain seamless network connectivity as they move between MAPs. The service is transparent to the client device and requires no special client software. It maintains continuous data security for devices using WEP, WPA, WPA2 or VPN security, even as they roam across subnet boundaries.

The Voice Over WLAN Service (VoWLAN) is a toll-quality voice service that leverages existing VoIP systems and extends telephony services to wireless phones. It features support for a wide range of standards-based and proprietary WLAN phones, including popular SpectraLink™ and Vocera™ handsets. WMM™-certified QoS mechanisms support emerging third-party phone clients and provide four levels of prioritization, enabling video and data services to be converged on the same WLAN.

For trouble-free deployment in geographically distributed networks, Colubris provides its Plug-and-Play Deployment Service. MAPs use standard dynamic look-up procedures to identify the MSC to which it has been assigned. Mutual authentication using digital certificates assures security and eliminates the risk of rogue access point connectivity. Once authenticated, the MSC establishes an encrypted tunnel for exchange of configuration and control information with the MAP.

The Public/Guest Internet Access Service provides convenient Internet access to an organization's guests and visitors - without compromising the security and performance of other WLAN services. It controls client devices that are connected via WLAN access points or directly to an Ethernet network, enabling service providers and enterprises to authenticate users and control session operation.

The service features the Colubris "Zero Configuration" service interface, which automatically adapts to any client device's network settings, ensuring the best possible user experience. Advanced IP networking features, including Adaptive NAT™, SMTP redirect, and DHCP services, provide seamless support for VPN tunneling and other applications demanded by business travelers and consumers. Per-user bandwidth controls enforce fair sharing of limited network bandwidth among users.

In Public Access networks, this service enables service providers to implement a variety of hotspot business models and back-end authentication and billing systems. Operators have the flexibility to authenticate users locally, or by referencing a centralized remote Authentication Authorization and Accounting server. Session activity records include elapsed time and bulk data transfers. Users can be redirected to separate portal, AAA and DHCP server destinations based on the user's location or associated SSID, enabling a range of service customization or wholesale service models. Alternatively, operators can outsource these functions using the service's integrated support for leading third-party hotspot billing services.
